Keto Moroccan Sweet and Spicy Walnuts

Walnuts are such a great nut to include in any Keto or Low Carb diet. Walnuts are full of healthy fats and low in net carbs, which makes them satisfying and delicious. These walnuts are coated in a spice mixture that is inspired by Moroccan flavors. The spice mixture starts with melted butter, brown sugar sweetener, lemon zest, lemon juice, Aleppo chili pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom. The flavor is outstanding! It is bright while at the same time deep and spicy from both the cinnamon and Aleppo chili peppers.

What spices are used in these walnuts?

Ground Aleppo chili pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom are used, which pair lovely with the lemon juice and lemon zest flavors. The sweetener is there to amp up all the flavors.

How much salt should I use to season the walnuts?

The kosher salt amount listed in the recipe is mostly a suggestion. You will need more sodium/electrolytes on the Keto diet, so you may prefer more salt on here (and to be honest, it is quite delicious salty).

Recipe Steps

  • Step 1

Place the walnuts onto a baking sheet and bake at 310 F for 15 minutes until lightly toasted. The lower oven temperature will allow the flavor to develop on the walnuts without burning them.
    Step 1
  • Step 2

Place the melted butter, brown sugar sweetener, lemon zest (from one lemon), lemon juice, Aleppo chili pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, and kosher salt together in a medium sized bowl.
    Step 2
  • Step 3

Toss in the toasted walnuts and mix around to coat them.
    Step 3
  • Step 4

Place them back on the same baking sheet and bake for another 7 minutes. Stir them and bake again for 7 minutes.
    Step 4
  • Step 5

Taste the walnuts and add more salt as soon as they come out of the oven. Feel free to use a very fine grind salt as it will stick better on the outside and provide a delicious salty bite.
