Keto Oaxacan Lemonade Cocktail
This may not necessarily be an authentic Mexican drink, but it sure is a fun way to celebrate with Keto Day of the Dead recipes. Many liquors are 100% Keto-friendly, and you can still enjoy fun cocktails without including added sugars. This Oaxacan lemonade was inspired by the Day of the Dead celebrations. Making the cocktail can be done in just a couple of minutes, and it’s a fun way to enjoy your favorite liquor brands. Enjoy responsibly!
What goes into this Keto beverage?
You’ll need to choose vodka and mezcal (tequila) that you like. This is a sipping cocktail, so the flavors of the alcohol are prominent! A base of plain vodka is enhanced by the natural smokiness of mezcal. The cocktail is shaken with a mixture of lemon, cilantro, and natural low-carb sweeteners before being poured into a frosty cold glass.
What is Mezcal?
If you’re not finding “mezcal” on the store shelves, don’t worry. Tequila and mezcal are interchangeable in the recipe. Both tequila and mezcal are made from the Mexican agave plant. All tequilas can be categorized as mezcal, but mezcal includes a wider region of alcohol production outside of tequila. Mezcal that isn’t tequila is often recognized for its smokier flavor.
What are some substitutes for agave?
Using a drop of natural agave in the cocktail is a sweet way to keep the flavors of the drink cohesive, but you can substitute it with other Keto sweeteners. Use an ⅛ teaspoon of erythritol or a monk fruit blend sweetener in place of agave for a more Keto-friendly drink. If you don’t mind the taste of stevia, you can even substitute it with additional drops instead of using agave. Make sure to choose the juiciest lemons you can find to make the recipe to ensure you’re using the sweetest fruit instead of the most tart.

Step 1
To make the cocktail quickly, choose a martini glass or something similar that will be safe in your freezer. Wet a paper towel until it’s damp, squeeze out the excess water, and wrap the paper towel around the glass. Set the wrapped glass in your freezer for just 5 minutes to flash-chill the glass.Step 2
Make the cocktail mixer by squeezing fresh lemon juice through a sieve to remove any seeds or pulp. If it’s in season, this would be an excellent opportunity to feature a sweet-tasting lemon, like a Meyer lemon. Add a drop of agave and liquid stevia to the drink.Step 3
To assemble the drink, fill a shaker with ice cubes, tear 1 or 2 cilantro leaves, and add them to the shaker. Add vodka, mezcal, and lemonade mixer. Shake the cocktail well until it’s frothy, then pour it through the top of the shaker into your chilled glass. You can garnish the cocktail with additional cilantro leaves or a twist of lemon.
