Keto Tomato Ketchup

Store bought tomato sauce is often loaded with sugars and artificial flavorings. This low carb recipe is the perfect healthy alternative!

Rich, tangy and slightly sweet, this tomato ketchup is the perfect accompaniment to meats, for dipping veggies and adding to low carb pasta dishes.

Although xylitol has been used in this recipe, feel free to sub for your preferred low carb sweetener and adjust to taste.

Recipe Steps

  • Step 1

    Add the tomato puree and balsamic vinegar to a small saucepan over a gentle heat and stir together to combine.

    Add the garlic powder, onion powder, cinnamon, paprika, celery salt, cloves and xylitol. Stir into the tomato mixture.

    Add the water to the pan, stirring everything together well.

    Bring the mixture to a gentle boil then simmer for 10 minutes until you have a thick tomato sauce. Cool and serve.

    This ketchup is so much better than the store bought sugar free version. I find the store bought sugar-free ketchup tastes mostly of vinegar and not much tomato. I did have a bit of an issue with this recipe however. When I attempted the recipe as written, the sauce really wouldn't simmer because it was so thick it was just blowing big bubbles in the air and making a mess on the stove. At the same time, the texture was off. It was gritty because the powdered spices had not dissolved well so I added more water with the idea I would have to cook the water out but at least the spices would dissolve through a proper simmering process. That worked fine so if you encounter the same issue just know that you have to add more water but allow it to simmer down until the sauce is to your liking in thickness. Also, it may help to know that tomato puree is simply a one-to-one ratio of tomato paste and water. If you have tomato paste on hand there's no need to shop for puree.

      Can you substitute the xylitol for monk fruit?
