Keto Christmas Almond and Orange Mince Pies
The ultimate Keto Christmas snack begins with these Keto Mince Pies! Yes you heard me right! Keto mince pies! Buttery pastry cases filled with a spiced nut, cranberry and brandy mixture. Grated orange zest and almond extract is a must as it balances all the warming spices in this Keto Christmas recipe. This recipe makes 14 bite sized mince pies and each piece is only 3g net carbs! Dust with powdered erythritol and stack them nicely before serving.
Tips for making these Keto Christmas mince pies:
- When making the pastry ensure the butter is at room temperature.
- The brandy is optional, but recommended as it does add to the flavors and the alcohol gets evaporated when simmered.
Can I substitute any ingredients?
- If possible, try to source an organic unwaxed orange for grating the zest, or substitute with a natural unsweetened orange extract.
- Unsweetened cranberries can be substituted with unsweetened tart cherries. You can omit them if you wish, but they do add a nice chew and flavor.
What equipment will I need?
A stand mixer is used in this recipe. You can still make this recipe by mixing the pastry by hand and the filling with an electric whisk.
Silicone cases are also used for ease of turning out the pies once baked, but you can also use metal or aluminium foil cases.
Can I adapt the recipe for different diets?
This recipe is naturally gluten-free and can be made dairy-free and vegan by swapping the butter for coconut oil or a plant-based substitute and the cream cheese for a vegan alternative. The egg can be swapped for 1 chia egg or 1 tablespoon of psyllium husk mixed with 2 tablespoons of water and set aside until a thick gel forms.

Step 1
Line a cupcake tray with 16 silicone cases. Make the pastry first. Add the almond flour, coconut flour, psyllium husk, baking powder, 2 tablespoons erythritol, and a pinch of sea salt to the large bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment. Whisk to loosely combine.Step 2
Add in 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, cream cheese, and 1 egg to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium-high speed for a few minutes until a dough begins to form. If the dough feels a little dry, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time. The dough will hold itself together well and shouldn’t be crumbly. Flatten the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and leave to chill in the freezer for 20 minutes.Step 3
Make the filling. Finely chop the pecans and almonds if not already pre-sliced. Set a large frying pan on a stove over medium heat. Toast the pecans and almond slices for a few minutes, stirring occasionally until lightly golden. Add in 1/2 cup erythritol and stir through to gently melt. Take care not to burn the nuts or erythritol.Step 4
Grate the orange zest using the small holes of a box grater. Add the remaining 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, almond butter, unsweetened cranberries, vanilla extract, almond extract, orange zest, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, mixed spice, and a pinch of sea salt to the chopped nuts. Thoroughly mix all the ingredients together. Pour in the brandy and let simmer for a few minutes. Take off the heat to cool slightly—taste for flavor. Add more spice if needed.Step 5
Preheat the oven to 350°F/ 180°C. Remove the pastry from the freezer. Place the pastry between 2 sheets of baking paper and use a rolling pin to roll the dough to 1/4 - inch thickness.Step 6
Use a 3 ¼”/ 8 cm cookie cutter to cut out disks of pastry and place them into the silicone case. Re-roll any scraps of dough to yield more pastry cases. Shape and neatly tuck the edges of the pastry and prick the base of each case with a fork.Step 7
Par bake the empty cases in the center of the oven for 8-10 minutes until the pastry is just beginning to golden. Set aside to cool. The pastry needs to cool fully before filling with the mixture.Step 8
Place the remaining egg in the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Whisk the egg for a few minutes until frothy. Pour the filling mixture in with the egg and whisk until a sticky mixture forms.Step 9
Spoon a tablespoon of the filling mixture into each of the cases. Bake in the center of the oven for 12 minutes or until the filling has set and the pastry is golden and crisp. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before removing from the silicone cases and cooling on a wire rack.Step 10
To finish, dust with powdered erythritol. If you don’t have powdered erythritol to hand, place 2 teaspoons of granulated erythritol into a blender or food processor and whizz until a powder forms. Let the dust settle before opening the container. Transfer to a small sieve and dust over the mince pies! Enjoy!

It may be due to my inexperience with keto baking, but these didn't pack enough flavor for me. I would probably add more spice, cranberries and less almond butter next time, but I'm glad I tried them.

In the directions, #8, says “place the remaining egg in a bowl…“. Only one egg is mentioned in the recipe. Was the second egg in advertently left out of the recipe?

I made these! I did end up having to add a tablespoon of water to the pastry dough to get it to stick correctly. Very good recipe! Instead of psyllium I used flax seed powder.

I would very much like to make these, but am confused about some of the ingredients: - for psyllium seeds? - can I use husks or powder? - "Ground Mixed spice (Cinnamon, Coriander, Caraway, Nutmeg, Ginger, Cloves)" - do you have any quantities of each to suggest as that is not a premixed blend available where I live... Looking forward to trying these out.

Hi Yamizuma, many thanks for your interest in this recipe! The psyllium seeds is referring to the ground husk / powder. Sorry for the confusion, I will adjust the recipe ingredients. Mixed spice is usually found in most supermarkets as a pre-mixed blend, but you can make your own blend as the user mentioned below. I hope you enjoy them! :)

I think its an error in the ingredients list, in step 1 they list pysillium husk. I make my own mixed spice in bulk because I cant find a pre-made either and just use equal parts ground ginger, ground clove, cinnamon, ground caraway and ground nutmeg. Usually a tbsp of each spice into a jar and given a thorough mix. Although I do omit coriander from mine, it still has a distinctly "Christmassy" smell! I haven't made these yet, but they sound delicious!
