Keto Seven Spice Kebabs

38 ratings

Lebanese seven spice powder is a spice blend made up of black pepper, coriander, cloves, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. Blended together, they create an intoxicating spice blend that perfectly complements nearly all proteins. These kebabs are made with beef, but would also be great with ground lamb, turkey or chicken. You can either use ½ tablespoon of seven spice powder (which you can buy at many stores or online), or you can use the measurements listed in the ingredients list. These kebabs can be enjoyed on their own, with tahini or tzatziki sauce.

Get some skewers, wooden or otherwise (soak the wooden ones to prevent burning) and wrap the meat around them for easy handling and actual kabobs. Otherwise, they're just oblong meatballs.

It looks like the author started to divide the recipe into 10 pieces/kebabs/balls and then decided to make it into 16 pieces divided into four servings. Don’t worry so much about serving size! An extra pinch of onion is not going to throw you out of ketogenesis! The shape makes a difference to mouth-feel and the eating experience. If you want your kebabs to look like torpedoes, or footballs, or meatballs, go for it! It won’t affect your diet. Depending on the cut of meat and how it was handled before you started making this, it may hold together better, or not. If you prefer beautiful, perfectly smooth meatballs, You could stir in a beaten egg. You could mince the other ingredients super fine. You could divide the mixture into four even portions, then divide each of those into four even portions. Boring? You can always add a little cayenne, finely chopped fresh hot pepper, hot sauce or fish sauce to the recipe. It might not be authentic Lebanese kebabs, but it may fill your needs. I suspect it is meant to be eaten with a salad or sliced cucumbers, and a bit of yogurt and spices on the side. For me, I like the flavorful combination of spices for the meat. I am trying to eat more protein, and don’t have the appetite, but these are an improvement. I find this recipe helpful.

This is a go-to recipe to flavor any protein. Just use a pound, and this spice mix makes it great. I am considering increasing the portions to 5 pounds of meat, increasing the spices appropriately too, and making these up to freeze as a quick go-to snack or meal. These are great with cauliflower rice, on their own as a snack, air fried or baked, breaded with hemp hearts or not, as the protein in a quick salad, or served like falafels in a low carb wrap or romaine lettuce wrap. Love this spice mix, too! Want to try this spice mix on roasted zucchini next. Oh, by happy accident, I left out the olive oil, the first time I made it, and that worked great too! It is ok either way.

Great recipe! And great idea making some ahead to freeze. I bet it's good with a cucumber or dill sauce (made with yogurt or sour cream). Looking forward to trying this soon!

This is so delicious! I used Turkey meat instead of beef because that’s what I had but it was still so good. My whole family wanted more! I’ll definitely make it again and with beef next time.

I adapted the recipe to the ingredients I already had. Used 85% fat turkey instead of beef and cilantro instead of parsley. It’s so delicious!!

This recipe make zero sense. It says 1 serving is 4 kebabs and it also says 4 servings are one kebab. It says to have 1/5 serving for 0.5 carbs. We followed the recipe for 4 kebabs and hubby put it in my fitness pal and 1/4 was 3 carbs

Since the onion is the only thing in this recipe with any carbohydrates, I'd say 4 kabobs is correct when asking about serving size. The entire recipe, as listed, makes 4 servings, or 16 kabobs. I don't see why you're confused. It makes perfect sense.

This recipe was part of the “keto week 1” meal plan that I downloaded and committed to at least trying each recipe. I wasn’t expecting to be too impressed with this one and was sure my son wouldn’t eat it. I was very pleasantly surprised, and my son actually licked his plate! My only complaint is that even with following the recipe and making these to size, I only ended up with 12, not 16 (the recipe says it yields 4 servings of 4 kebabs). I made them closer to 2” each, and about half the diameter of a meatball. They were also very dry(used 85% beef). Next time I might bake them in a 9x13 glass dish instead of on parchment paper, baste them with the grease and skip broiling.

If you have a scale, you can weigh out 1 oz balls. There should be some leftovers (with all the add-ins), then just add the remainder to the rest.

Great seasonings that make this stand out as a unique dish. It is yummy reheated for lunch too. I served it with cauliflower fried “rice”.

Are you certain about the carb count? It seems a little high for hamburger with a bit of onion.

Careful with dried onions; they have 19g of carb in 1oz.

Onion is quite high - I actually use dried onion - much lower in carbs

Not a fan of the seasoning. Ground beef shouldn't taste like baked goods.

Spices were very overpowering and in my opinion, gave the kebabs a strange taste.
