Keto Beef and Cheddar Hand Pies

7 ratings

These little hand pies make for a great snack, lunch, or as a party appetizer! Each pie is made with a flaky and buttery keto tart dough crust, then filled with heavily seasoned beef and topped with a thin layer of golden brown cheese.

*Please note that you will need a full recipe of the Carb Manager Keto Tart Dough prepared in advance.

Recipe Steps

  • Step 1

To make the filling, heat the olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Place in the ground sirloin and cook it with all the seasonings until you have cooked through the beef and it’s a little crispy. Make sure all liquid is evaporated from the pan.
    Step 1
  • Step 2

Cool the beef mixture completely before continuing on. You may wish to make the beef filling and tart dough recipe on one day and chill both until they are ready to use the next day.
  • Step 3

When ready to assemble your hand pies, take your already-made tart dough and divide it into 8 equal portions.
    Step 3
  • Step 4

Press each portion into a full-sized muffin tin, so each ball of dough forms a cup shape. Make sure not to leave the bottom of the dough too thin. Then, freeze the tart dough cups in the muffin tins. This can take up to one hour.
    Step 4
  • Step 5

When the tart dough has finished freezing, preheat an oven to 375 degrees. Fill each tart dough cup with the cooled beef mixture, making sure not to overflow the dough. Then, place about a ½ tablespoon of shredded cheddar over the top of each one.
    Step 5
  • Step 6

Bake the hand pies for 10 minutes. Then, reduce the heat to 350 degrees, and bake for an additional 15 minutes. The tart dough should easily release from the muffin pan after cooling for about 5 minutes.
    Step 6

I changed up the recipe to make them breakfast hand pies by substituting the ground beef and spices with half a roll of hot breakfast sausage. They were absolutely delicious. I omitted the olive oil because I was using pork and it wasn't necessary but I did put the cooked meat in a strainer to cool while I waited on the tarts to freeze. I got a fair amount of oil and liquid out and there was zero sogginess to my pies. Once the tarts were frozen and meat cooled I assembled the hand pies and put them back in the freezer overnight. I followed the same baking instructions the next morning for a delicious breakfast. I will note that I have a 6 cup muffin tin and used the recipe to make six hand pies rather than eight. With my adjustments including the serving size adjustment each hand pie was still only two grams net carbs. Looking forward to making this many times in various versions.

Loved this, but my tart cups had a case of soggy bottom. Next time I will cook those partially, since the filling just needs heating/not cooking. Thanks for the recipe!

I am new to this way of eating and i really want to keep my carbs so, so instead of the keto tart crust called for in this recipe, i whipped a few eggs with heavy cream and poured that over the meat and cheese. It had to cook longer, but it tastes great.

Very tasty but I wish the pastry was included here because the macros or nutritional information doesnt work out right. So I separated everything and added it in manually.
