Keto Southern Fried Okra
This Keto take on southern fried okra is coated in a seasoned low carb breading, then pan fried until crisp and golden. This easy Keto side dish is simple to prepare, but delivers on flavor and texture. The perfect accompaniment to any southern inspired Keto dinner.
How to Make Keto Fried Okra
Typically, fried okra is coated in a carb heavy batter of flour or corn. Our low carb breading is prepared with ground almonds, smokey paprika, garlic powder and fragrant oregano. The okra is diced then coated in a layer of beaten egg before coating in the seasoned breading. The okra is then pan fried in olive oil until tender inside and crisp on the outside.
Serving Suggestions
This Keto fried okra makes a great side dish to a southern inspired main. Perfect served alongside Keto fried chicken or Cajun spiced pork chops. This would also make a great BBQ side, perfect for the whole family to enjoy.

Step 1
Clean the okra and cut off the tops and tips and discard. Dice the okra into half inch pieces and set to one side. Crack the egg into a mixing bowl and beat to combine. Set aside next to the okra. Add the ground almonds, salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder and oregano to another mixing bowl. Stir well to combine.Step 2
Tip the diced okra into the bowl with the beaten egg. Use a spoon to stir well. Ensure that all the okra pieces are liberally coated in the beaten egg.Step 3
Tip the prepared breading mixture into the bowl with the egg coated okra. Stir well to combine. Ensure that the okra pieces are well coated in the seasoned breading. The breading should easily adhere to the okra - it doesn’t matter if the breading is heavier in some places than others. These parts will just be extra crispy!Step 4
Heat the oil in a large skillet over a medium/high heat. Once hot, add the breaded okra pieces in an even layer. Cook the okra on one side until the breading is crisp and golden - about 4 minutes. Turn and fry the other side for a further four minutes or until the breading is crisp and golden all over and the okra is tender and cooked through. Serve hot.

Sounds really good! Should I make any adjustments if I use frozen okra ( already diced). Thaw first?

I’m from Alabama and have grown up eating southern fried okra. This is as close as it comes to that was without all the carbs. I even think it tastes better than what I had growing up.

This sounds delish! Can Superfine blanched almond flour be used in place of crushed whole almonds?

Long time since my Southern roots that I had okra! Saw fresh okra in the market here and nabbed it! This recipe was so good, reminiscent of my youth. To reduce carbs further I used just half the breading and it was enough and delicious. Will definitely make again.

Have you tried cooking this in the airfryer?

The breading also worked beautifully for some chicken fried steak pieces I had. I love fried okra and this was a good way to do since my change to KETO.
